Crown Prince Oskar I of Norway was Chancellor of the University of Oslo
The Rector of the University of Oslo is its senior representative. He is elected by the professors of the university for four years. Re-election is possible. So far all rectors have been professors. The rectors are supported by a vice-rector and possibly several vice-rectors.
The university was founded in 1811. It received its first fixed structures in 1813 with the establishment of the Academic College, which, according to a royal decree of 1816, consisted of the oldest professors from the four faculties, one from the theological, one from the legal, one from the medical and three from the philosophy faculty. The so-called Chancellor and the Pro-Chancellor of the University were appointed personally by the King. From 1845 to 1907, after a corresponding change in the law, the Academic College elected a representative from its own ranks as chairman.
