List of countries with the highest energy consumption
The list of countries with the highest energy consumption shows tables and graphics with information on the topic of energy consumption .
overview
According to the "BP Statistical Review of World Energy", the worldwide primary energy consumption in 2016 was 13,276.3 million tonnes of oil equivalent (OE). In 2015 it was 13,105.0 and in 2006 11,266.7 million tons of OE. This corresponds to an increase of 17.8 percent within 10 years. The five countries of the People's Republic of China, the USA, India, Russia and Japan consumed more than half of the energy. In Europe, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain were the largest consumers. In the European Union , primary energy consumption fell by 10.28 percent between 2006 and 2016. While a total of 1,830.2 million tons of OE were consumed in 2006, it was around 1,642.0 million tons of OE in 2016. The share of global consumption was 12.37 percent. In 2016, Germany ranked 7th worldwide with 322.5 million tons of OE (2006 = 341.3 million tons of OE). This corresponds to a decrease of 5.51 percent compared to 2006. The share of world consumption was 2.4 percent.
Fossil fuels ( crude oil , natural gas , coal ), renewable energies ( bioenergy , geothermal energy , solar energy , hydropower , wind energy ) and nuclear energy are recorded under primary energy in the “BP Statistical Review of World Energy” . It does not include fuels such as wood, peat and animal waste. The energy sources that are not listed have a high priority in some countries, but no reliable statistical information is available on their consumption. The data on global primary energy consumption are therefore too low. Self-collected fuels such as wood and cow dung alone account for around 10 percent of global consumption. For more than 2.5 billion people, burning biomass is sometimes the only source of energy for boiling and heating water.
The energy supply in 2016 was based primarily on the fossil fuels crude oil, coal and natural gas. They had a share of 85.52 (2006: 89.90) percent of the world's primary energy consumption. The share of nuclear energy was 4.46 (2006: 5.64) percent. The use of hydropower has been of great importance for centuries. It had a share of 6.86 (2006: 6.10) percent of the global primary energy consumption. Since the 1990s, the use of wind, solar energy and biomass in particular has increased sharply around the world (hence new renewable energies). Their share in primary energy consumption was 3.16 (2006: 0.83) percent.
Comparison of primary energy consumption
Countries by total consumption
The table compares the countries with the highest primary energy consumption , their share of world consumption in percent and the cumulative total. All figures relate to the states within their current borders. The data are in millions of tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe), with 1 Mtoe = 11.63 TWh = 41.88 1 PJ (Petajoule), 1 OE = 10,000 kcal = 11.63 kWh.
