List of unreleased songs by ABBA

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swedish band ABBA have written and recorded a number of songs during their ten year career that were never (fully) released. The following list shows songs that have been proven to exist.

ABBA years

1974

  • Ricky Rock 'n' Roller was recorded in 1974 but never released because it had too many similarities to So Long , according to composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus .
  • Terra Del Fuego , sung by all four band members, is a song that Andersson and Ulvaeus consider "one of their most embarrassing moments". Therefore, they only approved the publication of a short excerpt, which breaks off before the chorus. This excerpt was published on the Thank You for the Music CD box under the title Here Comes Rubie Jamie .
  • Baby is an early recording of Rock Me sung by Agnetha Fältskog . You can hear an excerpt from it on CD No. 4 of the Thank You for the Music CD box in the medley ABBA Undeleted .

1975

  • Stop and Listen to Your Heart is an early, slower version of Bang-A-Boomerang , but Andersson and Ulvaeus didn't like it, so it was later heavily reworked and finally released as the song just mentioned on the ABBA album .
  • Dancing Queen (Early Version) has a different backing track and an additional verse; the Spanish version recorded in 1980, however, contains this.
  • I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do (Early version) includes a second stanza.

1976

  • Funky Feet was never released because of the similarities to Dancing Queen and was instead recorded by Svenne & Lotta . In 2004 the song appeared on the album Alcazarized by the Swedish pop group Alcazar.
  • Monsieur, Monsieur is a faster, French-influenced version of My Love, My Life , sung by Fältskog.
  • Gypsy Girl is an alternate demo of Money, Money, Money .
  • Memory Lane is an earlier demo version of the songs Happy Hawaii and Why Did It Have to Be Me?

1977

  • I Am an A was only performed during the 1977 European and Australian tour, the melody of the chorus later served as the basis for the Chess song I Know Him So Well .
  • Get on the Carousel was part of the mini musical The Girl with the Golden Hair when it was played during the 1977 European and Australian tour . Parts of this song can be found in Hole in Your Soul . Parts of it can be heard in ABBA - The Film .
  • Scaramouche is an instrumental track recorded as part of ABBA - The Album .
  • Billy Boy is a working title of the song Take a Chance on Me with a slower backing track . A piece of this song can be heard in the ABBA Undeleted Medley.
  • Take a Chance on Me (New Mix) is a remix that was created in December 1977, presumably to be released as a single.

1978

  • Free As a Bumble Bee , sung by Ulvaeus, was created during the recording of Voulez-Vous . Can only be heard as an excerpt on CD No. 4 of the CD box Thank You for the Music from 1994 in the medley ABBA Undeleted . Parts of the song were also reused in I Know Him So Well (from the musical Chess ).
  • Hamlet III was planned in an instrumental version and one with vocals by Lyngstad and Fältskog. The melody of the title was reused around ten years later by Andersson for the title Lottis Schottis on his album Klinga mina klockor in the style of traditional Swedish folk music.
  • Summer Night City (Early Mixes) refers to around 30 very different mixes of the title that Michael B. Tretow submitted, as the composers were initially unsatisfied with this song.
  • Just a Notion was sung by all four ABBA members and exchanged for Angeleyes at the last moment .
  • Crying over You , sung by Ulvaeus to hard-hit piano sounds, is one of the many songs that was not felt to be good enough during the recording of Voulez-Vous . It can be heard as an excerpt on CD No. 4 of the CD box Thank You for the Music from 1994 in the medley ABBA Undeleted .
  • If It Wasn't for the Nights (Early Mix) was used as a playback during performances on Japanese and British television.
  • The Arms Of Rosalita is an early version of Chiquitita sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad ; a later recording called Chiquitita Angeliqua was sung by both singers.
  • Does Your Mother Know (Early Mix) was used as playback in the TV special ABBA in Switzerland and has a completely different backing track; the intro of this song was later reused in You Owe Me One .

1979

  • I'm Still Alive was written by Fältskog and sung during the '79 tour. Although there were two plans to record this song, it never found its way on tape. The song is included for the first time on the live album Live at the Wembley Arena , released on September 26, 2014 with recordings from November 10, 1979.
  • Rubber Ball Man , sung by Lyngstad, was recorded in late summer and was intended as a single for ABBA's second greatest hits album ; the group eventually chose Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) . A revised version with the title Under My Sun was still on the track list during rehearsals for the '79 tour, and was finally deleted there. Rubber Ball Man can be heard as an excerpt of 1:30 minutes on CD No. 4 of the 1994 CD box Thank You for the Music in the medley ABBA Undeleted . Parts of the melody were used for Under Attack in 1982 .
  • Dream World was recorded for the album Voulez-Vous and replaced by Does Your Mother Know . Parts of the chorus were taken over melodically. In 1994 the song appeared on the Thank You for the Music CD box .

1980

  • Burning My Bridges was recorded at the beginning of the recording of the Super Trouper album, but was never fully released. Part of this can be heard in the ABBA Undeleted Medley.
  • Put On Your White Sombrero (which was later released in the box set Thank You for the Music ) was also planned for this album, but was then exchanged for the title Super Trouper .
  • Our Last Summer (Early Version) was released on the promo cassette "Promotionkassett hösten -80".

1981

  • When All Is Said And Done (demo version and various mixes) has a different melody between the individual verses. Originally, the third stanza was followed by a repetition of the first, which was left out at the end. However, when the video was released in 1981, it still featured a different ending. However, the video currently released on DVD includes the album version.
  • Nationalsång (Anthem) is an instrumental piece that the name among fans Opus 10 carries and in the musical Chess was used
  • I Am the Seeker is also an instrumental piece that was later included in the musical ABBAcadabra and recorded by BA Robertson .
  • Two for the Price of One (Early Version) has a significantly different text.
  • Givin 'a Little Bit More , sung by Ulvaeus, didn't make it onto The Visitors album . You can also hear an excerpt of about 2 minutes from this on CD No. 4 of the CD box "Thank You For The Music" from 1994 in the medley ABBA Undeleted .
  • An Angel's Passing Through My Room is an earlier version of Like an Angel Passing Through My Room in the style of Lay All Your Love on Me , sung by Agnetha and Frida.

1982

  • Just Like That was to appear on ABBA's never-ending ninth album. Until today this song has not been released as a whole. But you can also hear an excerpt from this title (two minutes long, consisting of chorus and saxophone part) on CD No. 4 of the 1994 CD box Thank You for the Music in the medley ABBA Undeleted . On the one hand sung by Fältskog in the typical ABBA sound, on the other hand parts of the song with the very haunting saxophone sounds remind a little of the then quite successful music by Supertramp . Earlier demo versions of the song show similarities with the melody of Under Attack , which was recorded at the same time. There is a version with a different middle section (without saxophone) and a verse text by Gemini , in German by Angelika Milster under the title Simply so .

1983

  • When The Waves Roll Out to Sea is an instrumental piece with the verse melody of Just Like That ; although it is still counted as an ABBA song, it was probably written after it ended.
  • Every Good Man is a demo version of the Chess song Heaven Help My Heart sung by Fältskog, who was just in the studio to record her first English solo album, Wrap Your Arms Around Me .
  • Another You, Another Me was also sung by Fältskog, as Gemini singer Karin Glenmark confirmed many years later; the song was finally released in 1985 by Karin and Anders Glenmark as Gemini .
