history

The West Prussian garrison town of Deutsch Eylau received a rail connection from the Prussian Eastern Railway on the Thorn – Osterode line in 1872 . The connections to Gdansk and Mława in the Russian Vistula region were opened by the Marienburg-Mlawka Railway in 1876 and 1877. There were also small railway lines.

From 1920 to 1939, the corridor traffic of the Polish State Railways in the city on the routes between Berlin and Insterburg (with through cars from Wroclaw ) ended.

Water tower from 1871

The railway water tower was built in 1871 on a small hill ( location ) next to the station and served to supply the steam locomotives with water. An elongated, octagonal half-timbered floor rises up on a red brick substructure , which is structured with pilasters . It is filled with light bricks. The hill is secured on the street side with a retaining wall. The building is not entered in the voivodship register of monuments (as of December 2018). A second tower was erected immediately adjacent in 1915.

The water tower of the city water supply was built between 1903 and 1905 on Jamielniker Weg (today ulica 1 Maja ( Lage ) in the Podleśne district). The economic development of Eylaus after the connection to the rail traffic and the Oberland Canal enabled the city administration to commission the construction of a municipal water supply and sewage system. In 1901 the community bought 8.99 hectares of land to build a waterworks.

The 27 meter high red brick tower has a diameter of about ten meters. Its shaft tapers upwards. The arched windows are staggered. The architectural style is called neo-Gothic . The upper floor with the water tank consists of steel framework, which is also filled with red brick. The roof structure is made of wood. Narrow, vertical ribbon windows let in light. The window frames are made of metal. Inside the tower, cast iron stairs lead upwards. The entrance portal is structured with brick pilasters and has a triangular gable. The water was initially pumped from two wells 15 and 18 meters deep. The pumps were powered by gas engines.

The building was entered in the Register of Immovable Monuments of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship under the number 1539 (A-1954) on March 18, 1987, and in 2018 it was included in a three-year municipal monument conservation program in Iława.

The "railway water tower no. 2" (Polish wieża kolejowa nr 2) stands on a hill at the Dworcowa street in the district Wojska Polskiego ( location ), next to the Tower of 1871. After 1905 got a new railway station in Eylau, from the day nine trains went to Berlin, another railway water tower was built ten years later. The structure has a mushroom shape. Its shaft was made of red brick and divided into a regular arrangement by narrow, vertical windows. The mighty upper floor, on the other hand, is made of concrete . Inside there is a concave bottom water tank and in the center a chimney with a diameter of one meter, which is topped with a roof vent and a lightning rod . The tank with a capacity of 250 m³ can be reached via concrete stairs and a ladder. Today the floor shows small round windows, whereas in 1915 it was equipped with high round arched windows.

The building was entered in the voivodeship's register of immovable monuments on December 28, 1998 under number 1618 (A-4096), and in 2018 it was also included in the municipal conservation program.

Another water tower is located in Zakłady Naprawcze Taboru Kolejowego (ZNTK), the vehicle repair plant on ulica Kolejowa ( Lage ). It is located in the vehicle repair plant. The Bahnbetriebswerk Deutsch Eylau (Dy) was set up as a workshop in 1911. Its importance increased in 1920, as the corridor trains received German locomotives here to continue their journey to Insterburg. The water tower built in 1942 probably had a previous building. The cylindrical brick building with a constant diameter has a height of about 45 meters. The load-bearing structure of the six-story building consists of four pillars on which the ceiling rests, which is also the bottom of the tank. Narrow windows let light into the interior.

The building was entered in the Voivodeship's Register of Immovable Monuments under number 1619 (A-4095) on December 28, 1998, and in 2018 it was also included in the city's monument preservation program.
