Applied literary studies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under applied literature refers to the ability of literary research expertise in various fields of activity of the literary establishment ( publishing , bookstores , literary agencies , - houses or offices) to bring the application. Applied literary studies should therefore bring students closer to knowledge and skills in the areas of teaching and promoting literature . Associated courses at universities or colleges therefore combine practice with theory: This takes place, for example, in the form of exercises (in creative writing , literary criticism , editorial work, etc.), which are linked to associated reflections (in the form of literary theory or poetics ). The students should not only be prepared for professional practice, but also acquire judgment about (above all) contemporary literature and its forms of communication. The already mentioned term literature mediation can therefore be used synonymously for applied literary studies ; Overlapping with the term literature didactics is also possible.

Concept history

The term applied literary studies emerged as a result of a turning point in German studies towards the end of the 1960s, which began to show greater interest in society. In the 1970s and 80s, Hans-Georg Kempers Angewandte Germanistik, Ingrid Kerkhoff's Angewandte Textwissenschaft and the volume Angewandte Literaturwissenschaft of the so-called NIKOL working group appeared . The concepts presented in these books tested the turn of literary studies, for example, to literary didactics (Kemper), to so-called social hermeneutics (Kerkhoff) and to empirical research methods (NIKOL working group). 1980 declared Norbert Mecklenburg the literary criticism to spent on most of the literature, of which he hoped, knowledge of literature widest possible audience across. Today's understanding of applied literary studies , on the other hand, is much more pragmatic: it is intended to help graduates and students of literary studies to build bridges between theory and practice and thus to facilitate their entry into professional life.

Education

As part of the course, for example, book projects are realized, third-party funds are raised for literary events, author readings are organized, online magazines are created or PR concepts are developed. criticism

In an essay in connection with applied literary studies, the literary scholar Stephan Porombka speaks of the “bad conscience” of literary studies, “which has kept students as far away from the present as possible for years and now with regard to future career opportunities - keyword: employability - in the end try to give some insight into what awaits them beyond their studies.
