The Little Blue Run is a small stream in western Pennsylvania . It rises in Greene Township , Beaver County and flows into Mill Creek just before it flows into the Ohio River . Its original length was about five kilometers, and since the 1970s a large part of its original valley has been an ash dump.
Little Blue Run Dam
The Little Blue Run Dam is an arched dam approximately 122 m (400 ft ) high and 671 m (2200 ft) long . The resulting reservoir serves as a dump for fly ash and other viscous residues from flue gas cleaning , which are pumped here from the Bruce Mansfield power station located eight kilometers to the east . Today, a milky turquoise lake covers an area of 5.26 km² (1300 acres ) and extends into neighboring West Virginia .
In addition to environmental damage from heavy metals, there is theoretically the risk of a dam bursting, as in 2008 with a much smaller ash basin in Kingston , Tennessee . A break in the Little Blue Run Dam would affect around 50,000 people on the Ohio River, including the residents of East Liverpool . The reservoir is therefore on an EPA list of 49 potentially dangerous such facilities.
