East Liverpool is a city in Columbiana County , Ohio , United States . At the 2000 census, the city had 13,089 inhabitants. It lies on the banks of the Ohio River and borders the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia . Due to the decline in the pottery industry, the population decreased by 4,000 between 1980 and 2000.

history

Before the arrival of the European settlers, the area was the tribal area of various Iroquois tribes. The history of the city begins with Isaac Craig's acquisition of land under the Land Act in 1796. Initially, the resulting settlement was named St. Clair in honor of St. Clair Arthur, governor of the Northwest Territory. Thomas Fawcett acquired land from Craig on July 1, 1800 and was the first European to settle in what is now the municipality. Initially, the place was generally called Fawcettstown after its founder . It owes its current city name to an English potter who named the place Liverpool . However, there was already a second Liverpool in Ohio in Medina County, so the settlement was renamed East Liverpool in 1834 .

Due to the occurrence of yellow clay in the vicinity of the city, pottery became one of the most important branches of industry in the founding years and thereafter. By 1880, the city claimed the status of home to the largest pottery in the world, the Knowles, Taylor & Knowles Pottery company . At that time, however, the clay was imported from other countries, as over time white earthenware had replaced yellow. Due to the large number of potteries, East Liverpool also got the nickname Crockery City ( pottery town ). To this day, pottery is the city's most important line of business.

East Liverpool is home to a Kent State University campus specializing in computer technology , occupational therapy and physical therapy .
