Liu Dao
Liu Dao ( Chinese 六 岛 , Pinyin Liù dǎo , "island number 6") is an international and multidisciplinary artist collective from Shanghai , People's Republic of China . It was founded by the island6 Arts Center under the direction of the French curator Thomas Charvériat with the support of the Latvian art director Zane Mellupe. Performance and multimedia artists and technicians have come together under the name "Liu Dao" to create electronic art. Her work focuses on interactive art installations that explore the effects of new “technologies on our perception and forms of communication”. Since August 2010 the Liu Dao artist collective consists of Chinese and international actors who have their main place of work in the island6 Arts Center.
Creative process
Liu Dao uses digital technologies as a mouthpiece and projection surface for his emotions and thoughts about Shanghai in the 21st century and communicates them in the universally understandable language of art. Most of their works include LED displays. The choreographers develop simple movements that are filmed and later transformed into LED presentations. The work process is supervised by the art directors. In-house developed software is used to convert the film sequences, which creates an animated sequence of bitmaps .
cooperation
All of Liu Dao's works are created jointly by several artists. The exchange of ideas and the collaboration between these artists is intended to increase the wealth of ideas and the development of conceptual projects. The concept for a work of art arises from the conversation between the curator and the art director in which the topic is worked out. The result of the conversation is recorded in writing and presented to the artists. After the feedback and the conceptual development of the artists, they work with the technicians on site to develop a strategy to implement the design. As with a film, recognition goes not only to the artist himself, but also to the authors, directors, models, cameramen, technicians, painters, programmers, choreographers and editors. This procedure, comparable to a film credits, can be seen as a direct counterpart to the otherwise usual handling, in which only the artists, but not all participants, are attributed the success.
concept
Liu Dao's LED works enliven and illuminate short but beautiful moments of life in the fast pace of the 21st century in Shanghai and Beijing. In the People's Republic of China, a moment can be forever and Liu Dao is dedicated to portraying that special moment. It is implemented by provoking a harmless feeling of warmth, by irresistible voyeurism within a spectrum of feelings and problems, which are usually well hidden behind closed doors. A multitude of emotions and recurring patterns and lifestyles are represented, all indicative of the endless cycle of male and female needs.
background
- urbanization
Towards the end of the eleventh five-year plan , China is in a phase of urbanization . The cities are marked by construction sites that are intended to modernize the infrastructure. Many of Liu Dao's works deal with this limbo of the unfinished.
- History and tradition
Liu Dao processed in his works a variety of influences and styles from the Chinese art and history, such as the symbol of the crane (Chinese symbol for long life), Chinese paper cuts , rice paper and Maoist Communist and images. Combined with the motif of urbanization, which includes the technological progress and modernity of Shanghai, the main focus of the collective is on breathing life into the Chinese tradition and "electrifying" it. The visual compositions often combine LED - animations with Chinese paper cuttings, so as to render the traditional images with the help of today's technology into the 21st century.
- interaction
With the help of sensors , motion detectors , GPRS - modem -controlled videos and sonorous distance meters , the viewer can interact with the works of Liu Dao.
Members
Since its inception, the collective has consisted of changing artists and curators from all over the world. In 2011 the team consisted of Yeung Sin Ching 杨倩菁, Peter Braidt, Jack Kip Mur, Loo Ching Ling 吕晶琳 and Jean Le Guyader, among others. In 2012, Liu Dao also included Katharina Droste, Nicolas Grefenstette, Dave Ahern, Alexia Kalteis, and Leela Shanker. The current composition of the collective includes new members such as Fabrice Amzel, Guan Yan 官 彦, Margaret Johnson, Cecilia Garcia, David Keohane and Melani Murkovic.
