Live at Carnegie Hall is a live album by the British progressive rock group Renaissance . It was recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York in June 1975 and released in 1976.
Emergence
On three consecutive evenings (June 20-22), Renaissance played at the sold-out Carnegie Hall. The tracks played came from the three previous albums, as well as Ocean Gipsy and the suite Scheherazade - later Song of Scheherazade - from the album Scheherazade and Other Stories, which was not yet released at the time, with the exception of the song Ashes Are Burning , the band was from the New Yorkers Philharmonic under the direction of Tony Cox. Tony Cox also wrote the orchestral arrangements for Scheherazade and Other Stories . This may also be the reason that the two new songs are almost identical to the ones on the studio album released shortly afterwards and only the old ones have been reworked, especially Ashes are Burning with extended solos by John Tout on piano and John Camps on bass. The concerts at Carnegie Hall were among the most ambitious endeavors in the progressive rock boom of the 1970s.
reception
Live at Carnegie Hall peaked at number 55 on the US charts.
Allmusic's Bruce Eder thinks Live at Carnegie Hall is a good live performance by the group and the fourth great album in a row. He complains about deficiencies in the sound quality of the LP release at the time, which were largely eliminated with the remastered CD from 1994. He gives the album four stars out of five.
