Novella is the seventh studio album by the British progressive rock group Renaissance . It was released in 1977.

background

In order to prepare for the recording of Novella , the band withdrew to the home of a church in Surrey, where the pieces were extensively rehearsed. Because of the bankruptcy of BTM Records, Renaissance moved to Warner Bros. Records, in North America Sire Records remained responsible. As a result, Novella was released in the USA as early as January, but worldwide only in August 1977 - then with different covers. In the US, Midas Man / The Captive Heart was released as a single. In the UK, Back Home Once Again was chosen as the A-side , a song that was written as the soundtrack for the television series "The Paper Lads". This track was only used on the next LP A Song for All Seasons .

The orchestral arrangements used on the album are by Richard Hewson.

Reviews

“For some 'Proggies' that may be almost too smooth, I really like the music on this record. It exudes an atmosphere of the highest quality and feeling, musically loosely raised to the highest level, finest Art Rock. "

- Wolfgang Giese on rocktimes.de

"All in all," Novella "is business as splendorous as usual, full of musical intelligence; and so, despite the fact that the band's musical ideology doesn't feel as fresh as it did in previous albums, it deserves a very good rating - somewhere between 3½ and 4 stars. "

- progarchives.com

“Even today, this record has to be mentioned in the same breath as the previous successful albums, as the five songs combine everything that has made RENAISSANCE so distinctive in the scene. Here, too, the finest symphonic prog is offered, paired with elements from folk and pop. "

- Dirk Schulte on hooked-on-music.de

“The music is far removed from all common progressive rock clichés, or rather, from all pop / rock clichés at all. Michael Dunford's acoustic guitar and John Touts piano create an atmosphere that seems to come from a world beyond our world. "

- Günter Schote on babyblaue-seiten.de
