The Dennree GmbH (proper spelling: dennree from French denrées alimentaires de base , staple ' ) is a German wholesale for organic food and natural cosmetics based in Töpen in Hofer country . The company is the parent company of a group of companies called Dennree Group , which includes subsidiaries of the organic supermarket operator Denn's Biomarkt GmbH .

Company profile

The Dennree group of companies supplies over 1,400 organic markets and organic supermarkets in Germany , Austria , Luxembourg and South Tyrol / Italy with a range of around 13,000 items . Dennree is the top-selling specialist wholesaler for organic food and natural cosmetics in German-speaking countries.

In the 2017 financial year, the group achieved sales of 968.9 million euros with an average of 5530 employees. Of this, 380.8 million euros (39%) were attributable to the wholesale segment, 581.0 million euros (60%) to the retail segment and 7.1 million euros (around 1%) to animal and plant production.

history

The company was founded in 1974 by the then 22-year-old Thomas Greim on a farm in Moosach near Munich . He started trading with four dairy products from biodynamic agriculture from farmers in Chiemgau . A dairy processed the organic milk into drinking milk , yoghurt , sour milk and kefir , and some Munich health food stores and forerunners of the first natural food stores sold the Demeter products.

In 1975 Thomas Greim relocated the company headquarters to Töpen and founded the exclusive Dennree brand . (Initially with Demeter fresh milk in glass bottles and for years with his own Demeter dairy in Töpen.) In 1976 Thomas Greim also added biodynamically grown fruit and vegetables to the range.

Until 1983 he traded exclusively in Demeter products, with the core business being in exchange with other European wholesalers. From the mid-1980s, the company concentrated increasingly on business with organic stores acting as retailers .

The manufacturer of environmentally friendly natural textiles Living Crafts has been part of the Dennree Group since 2001 .

As of 2003, Dennree is now selling organic food under the name of denn's-Biomarkt.

In 2015 Dennree acquired Agrofarm 2000 Eichigt , an agricultural business in the neighboring Saxon Vogtland. The group of companies of Agrofarm Eichigt consists of three companies that operate suckler cows, extensive grassland management, milk production and the cultivation of feed and market crops. The farms with an area of 4000 hectares, including 800 hectares in the Czech Republic , were renamed Hofgut Eichigt and converted to ecological management. The certification of the farm by Bioland triggered a debate about the strategy of this most important organic farming association, given the size of the farm.

Denn's Biomarkt is an organic supermarket with a full range for everyday needs. Because in 2013 it was repeatedly criticized for under- tariff payments.

Denn's will operate a total of 28 stores in Austria in 2019. This includes seven locations of the food retailer Zielpunkt , which went bankrupt in 2015, in Vienna and Graz , which were taken over by Denn's in 2016. In 2010 Denn's also took over the oldest Austrian organic supermarket chain Bio-Maran.

BioMarkt group

The BioMarkt partner concept (originally: Naturring ) was launched in the early 1990s together with independent retailers. In 2009, a separate association was founded, which means that in addition to complete advice on all aspects of financing , location search , lease drafting , product range advice and marketing, Dennree GmbH negotiates national product ranges uniformly for all members. All members carry a basic range with the approx. 1300 top-selling products plus additional range modules for individual profiling. In addition, the members guarantee that they will show consideration for each other when choosing a location. There are currently around 260 organic market operators.

BioMarkt Future Foundation

In 2013, Dennree and the members of the BioMarkt group established the “BioMarkt Future Foundation”. Its aim is to support sustainable and future-oriented projects, initiatives and programs for the further development of the ecological movement, in particular ecological agriculture. Since it was founded, over 460,000 euros have been won for organic farming.

Projects that were funded in 2016 were e.g. B. the ecological cultivar development of Kultursaat e. V., the "training for ecological vegetable breeding" of Kultursaat e. V., the Society for Research into Formative Forces e. V., the educational initiative of Agrar Koordination e. V., the "free bio-dynamic training" in agriculture and support for the free distribution of GMO-free seeds to Haitian farmers as emergency aid after the hurricane of October 2016.
