The song is intended to draw attention to the Darfur conflict and the associated humanitarian catastrophe ( crimes against humanity , war crimes , genocide ), to motivate people to donate and is also aimed at politicians and the United Nations (UN) so that they intervene in Sudan .

The music was recorded in South Africa together with the South African Kwaito musician and producer Sello "Chicco" Twala . The video for the song was shot in a refugee camp in eastern Chad , on the border with Darfur ; it is considered to be the first music video produced by international artists in a war zone. The video shows mostly impressive scenes from the refugee camp.

The cover for Living Darfur was designed by British artist and Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili .

So far, the song reached the German, Swiss and Austrian charts with rather low positions in the first few weeks. However, it was represented in the hit lists in several countries, in Italy it even reached number 2.
