Wreck of the Llanishen

The Llanishen was a Welsh freighter that was torpedoed by a German submarine during World War I and subsequently stranded on the Spanish Mediterranean coast . The remains of the Llanishen , mainly the ship's hull , are now in the Oliguera Bay near Cadaqués .

history

The Llanishen in 1901 on the shipyard Richardson, Duck & Company built. The ship was owned by the shipping company Evan Thomas Radcliffe , headquartered in Cardiff , which at the beginning of the 20th century used freighters to transport coal from northern England and Wales to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions .

The Llanishen was torpedoed by the German U- 33 submarine on August 9, 1917 on an empty voyage from Savona in Italy to the Spanish exclave Melilla . The crew was in dinghies to the Catalan towns of Portbou and Port-Vendres save while Llanishen continued operation and at the headland There Caials in Cadaqués stranded.

Until the 1950s , attempts were repeatedly made to sink the wreck. Blasting with dynamite and years of exposure to storms and corrosion only left behind the heavily damaged hull, which today is 20 to 25 m deep.

The wreck today

The Llanishen is now a popular wreck among divers . It is located in the Punta de s'Oliguera bay, one of the few dive sites in the Cap de Creus Natural Park that can be dived from land (position 42 ° 17 ′ 3.2 ″  N , 3 ° 17 ′ 57.1 ″  E coordinates : 42 ° 17 ′ 3.2 "  N , 3 ° 17 ′ 57.1"  E ). Due to the low current and the shallow water depth, it can also be used for diving beginners or for training purposes. The wreck itself serves as an artificial reef and offers shelter and protection for fish and marine plants.
