Evan Thomas Radcliffe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evan Thomas Radcliffe was a Welsh shipping company founded in 1882 and headquartered in Cardiff , United Kingdom . The company was founded by the commercial captain Evan Thomas and the businessman Henry Radcliffe. The main business, especially at the beginning of the 20th century, was the worldwide transport of coal . The shipping company was dissolved in 1980.

history

In the beginning, all ships of the shipping company Evan Thomas Radcliffe sailed without a fixed trade route , so they were so-called tramp ships . Nevertheless, the success between 1882 and 1914 was mainly based on the transport of coal from the Tyne region in northern England and from south Wales to western Europe, to the Mediterranean - and especially to the Black Sea region . The return to Western Europe and the British Isles often took place with grain from southern Russia as cargo. At the beginning of the First World War in 1914, Evan Thomas Radcliffe operated 28 ships, making the shipping company the largest shipping company in Cardiff .

From 1914 to 1918 Evan Thomas Radcliffe suffered heavy losses as the shipping company lost 20 ships during the war. The transport of coal to the Black Sea ports such as Odessa , Taganrog and Novorossiysk and back with grain still existed during the First World War, but the transatlantic trade with America and the transport of goods to Southeast Asia became increasingly important at this time.

Evan Thomas Radcliffe received high compensation for the losses after the First World War . Since the acquisition costs for new ships were high at that time, the shipping company only bought a new ship in 1920. At that time the company owned nine ships with a total tonnage of 41,254 GRT .

The World Trade and order situation broke for Cardiff shipping companies in the interwar period one, but it was the austerity of Evan Thomas Radcliffe thanks that the cruise line's Depression survived in the 1920s. In the hope of better economic times, the shipping company was able to acquire new ships again in 1925.

The Second World War was catastrophic for Evan Thomas Radcliffe, as eleven of her ships were sunk and only five ships survived the war unscathed. Since the British shipyards were unable to compensate for the loss of merchant ships , Evan Thomas Radcliffe received six ships from North American shipyards on charter terms .

The time after World War II was rebuilding , but never came close to the prosperity of Evan Thomas Radcliffe before the First World War. The company's own ships were mainly built for the transport of coal, but this became less important after the war. The ownership structure of Evan Thomas Radcliffe was changed: The previous partners Evan and Reid Group took over all shares in the shipping company. The ships were converted to meet the new requirements, and part of the shipping fleet was used for oil transport from this time on .

The trade then consisted mainly of oil deliveries from the Persian Gulf and Sumatra to the European ports, the other transport ships had no fixed routes. They traveled around the world and rarely came to their home port of Cardiff.
