Lluís Romeu i Corominas (born June 23, 1874 in Vic ; † September 23, 1937 there ) was a Catalan composer , organist , conductor and Roman Catholic priest.

life and work

Lluís Romeu received his basic musical training from Lluís Jordà at the municipal music school in Vic. He deepened his musical knowledge in studies with Felip Pedrell in Barcelona and completed his studies with the organist and composer Josep Ribera in Barcelona. In 1898 he was ordained a priest.

He worked as an organist in the Bonanova parish during his studies in Barcelona . In 1901 he became the organist and conductor of the Cathedral of Vic . He gave up these positions in 1920.

Lluís Romeu is a composer of original, profound works in which, in the manner of a modern treble, he created a connection between the unison melodies of Gregorian chant and the Catalan folk song . He wrote five masses , motets , hymns , songs and chants, organ pieces and the oratorio Adveniat regnum tuum . A high point of his compositional work were numerous harmonizations of Catalan religious folk songs, in particular of choral versions of Catalan Christmas carols. Some of his compositions are widely known in Catalonia and are often performed on religious occasions. That is why Romeu is dubbed the "apostle of sacred music" there.
