Loalwa Braz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Loalwa Braz Vieira (born June 3, 1953 in Rio de Janeiro , † January 19, 2017 in Saquarema ) was a Brazilian singer and songwriter . As the singer of the French-Brazilian pop group Kaoma , she became world famous in 1989 with the song Lambada , which reached the top spot on the charts in eleven countries.

Life

Loalwa came from a family of musicians. Her father was an orchestra conductor and her mother a concert pianist. She learned to play the piano from the age of four and to sing from the age of 13. She then lived in Paris and Geneva and most recently near the coastal town of Saquarema, about 70 km from Rio de Janeiro. She was never able to build on the Lambada success, but the Guinness Book still lists her, according to her own website, as one of the 20 most-heard voices in the world. Her songs were shaped by the Brazilian rhythms she grew up with.

Career

The biggest hit of their band Kaoma, Lambada , sold over 25 million copies as a single and received around 80 gold and platinum records. The dance of the same name became known worldwide through the song. She created and sang songs in four languages: in addition to her native Portuguese, also in English, French and Spanish.

death

On the night of January 19, 2017, her body was found in a burned-out car near her home. On the same day, police arrested three men who were suspected of the murder of Braz Vieira. Among those arrested, the 23-year-old guard of her small pension confessed. In January 2018, the three men were sentenced to 37, 28 and 22 years in prison for burglary and death.
