Lochaline ( Scottish Gaelic Loch Àlainn , "beautiful lake") is the most important town in Morvern , Council Area Highland , with around 200 inhabitants . It is located on the north coast of the mouth of the Loch Aline fjord and can be reached from the road via the A884 . Lochaline is connected by ferry to Fishnish on the Isle of Mull and has a gas station and shop. Nearby is an approximately one hundred year old church, where legend says that a previous building dates from the 6th century. The oldest gravestones in the cemetery date back to the 8th century.
There has been a silica sand mine in Lochaline since 1940 , which was opened to replace silica sources that had become inaccessible during World War II . A source was important for the manufacture of crown glass . Before the mine opened, the town only had 60 residents. In November 2008 the imminent closure of the mine was announced.
