Lockhart Muirhead

Lockhart Muirhead , more rarely Morehead (* 1765 ; † 1829 ) was a Scottish scholar and first Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Glasgow . The chair was in 1807 by King George III. was founded to find a curator for the extensive collection of the late London-based Scottish anatomist William Hunter , which forms the basis of the Hunterian Museum .

Life

Muirhead was born in Scotland in 1765 to Patrick, Pastor of the Church of Scotland , and Elizabeth Muirhead. He studied at the University of Glasgow and obtained his MA in 1797. After graduating, Muirhead toured France and Italy just before the French Revolution and learned both languages ​​so well that on his return to Glasgow he taught them at the university and even published a French grammar . He published reviews of French and Italian specialist literature in the Monthly Review and the Edinburgh Review , including one on the Philosophy Zoologique by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck .

He gave up his foray into languages ​​and taught natural history , a combination of geology and zoology . In 1807 he took over the post of university librarian, which he retained during his regius professorship. Other sources assign him the post of librarian from 1795 to 1823.

In the summer of 1807, Muirhead traveled to London to personally oversee the packing and shipping of Hunter's collection. It was his first act as Keeper of the Hunterian Museum . The collection had been there since Hunter's death in 1783, awaiting an adequate resolution.

From 1808 Muirhead was officially listed as a Regius Professor. He held the chair until his death in 1829. The University honored Muirhead with an LL.D.

Lockhart married Anne Campbell. Her son, James Patrick Muirhead , became the most important biographer of James Watt .
