The Lockyer Creek is a river in Lockyer Valley in South East Queensland in Australia .

It flows a few kilometers north-northeast of Lowood , below the Wivenhoe Dam , into the Brisbane River . The river is named after the British soldier Edmund Lockyer .

Catchment area

The catchment area covers 3032 km². The river drains part of the western Scenic Rim . The headwaters of the river are in the Main Range , a small area of the Great Dividing Range . A large part of the floodplain has been converted into arable land, but parts of the upper reaches are still heavily overgrown with the original vegetation. Bushfires , the protection of the soil , the water quality and the flood protection are the biggest problems in the course of the water.

There are nine major reservoirs in the catchment area , including the lakes at Atkinson Dam and Bill Gunn Dam, and Lake Clarendon . During the last drought in Australia, the Lockyer Creek valley was one of the driest catchment areas in Queensland. There was extensive rainfall in Queensland as of late 2010, and on 10/11. January 2011 there was a flash flood at Lockyer Creek with several deaths.

Tributaries

Among the tributaries of the Lockyer Creek include Flagstone Creek, Sandy Creek, Alice Creek, Laidley Creek, Tenthill Creek, Murphys Creek and Ma Ma Creek.

bridges

Designed by William Pagan Lockyer Creek Bridge in Guinn Park is one of the largest of its type in Queensland and one of the first railway arch bridges made of reinforced concrete in Australia. The bridge, built in 1911, is depicted on a stamp that was part of the Landmark Bridges stamp series published in 2004 , the motifs of which represent milestones in Australian bridge construction. The bridge was included in the Queensland Heritage Register because of its architectural importance . Another bridge on the same line crosses Lockyer Creek closer to Gatton and was built in 1903.
