Ernst Friedrich Neubauer (born July 31, 1705 in Magdeburg , † March 15, 1748 in Gießen ) was a German Graecist , Orientalist and theologian .

Life

Neubauer was the son of the royal Prussian coin was one born Johann Georg Neubauer on 31 July 1705 in Magdeburg. Having trained at a Magdeburg grammar school , he attended the Joachimsthal grammar school in Berlin from 1719 , as his father had been called there. There he already concentrated on the oriental languages and moved to the University of Halle in 1724 . Under Johann Heinrich Michaelis and Christian Benedikt Michaelis he received his training in oriental literature there, and he also attended theological lectures. From 1726 he attended lectures at the University of Jena . He was also in theSyrian , Arabic and rabbinic languages . At Easter 1727 he returned to the University of Halle to devote himself further to oriental studies. He also practiced preaching and taught the Hebrew language and theology in the orphanage .

In the summer of 1728 Neubauer was in Berlin for a few weeks. He then went back to Halle because he wanted to pursue an academic career. In 1729 he defended his dissertation de Salomonis ad laetitiam exhortationibus, quas libro Coheleth interspersit , whereby he was promoted to a master's degree and was allowed to give lectures on history and philosophy .

Through the mediation of Joachim Justus Breithaupt , one of Neubauer's teachers, he was appointed rector of the theological seminary in Halle. Not much later he fell critically ill and traveled to Berlin to recover, from where he was able to return to Halle in March 1730. When he had recovered, he was able to defend his dissertation de exercitiis disputandi frequentius in Academiis instituendis in April and was consequently appointed as an adjunct at the philosophical faculty . He also explained the symbolic books at the theological seminary.

He resigned from this activity and as a lecturer as early as 1732, as Johann Jakob Rambach appointed him as a full professor for the Oriental and Greek languages at the University of Giessen . In October 1732 he accepted the office. After Rambach died in 1736, Neubauer received his position as extraordinary professor of theology.

On the occasion of this promotion he received his doctorate in theology in 1737 with his Diss. Sistens vindicias universae Theologiae Christianae ejusque Mosaicae, depravationibus famosissimi interpretis Pentateuchi Werthemiensis, per singulos fidei christianae articulos oppositas . From 1743 he was responsible for the scholarship holders at the university as Ephorus and shortly thereafter became a full professor of theology.

On March 12, 1748 he was also appointed superintendent and professor primarus at the University of Rinteln , but died three days later at the age of 42.

family

From 1733 Neubauer was married to Johanne Christiane Schmoll, daughter of a preacher in Echzell . She died in 1734, so that in the following year he married the daughter of a councilor in Langensalza , Caroline Benigne Hahn. With this he had (at least) five children. These included Johanna Maria Elisabetha (1737–1773), poet, married to the doctor Franz Christian Merck, and Johann Ernst Neubauer , doctor.

Work / reception after Döring

Neubauer was a thoroughly and diversely educated scholar who was well acquainted with various theological areas, in particular with Oriental Studies and Jewish antiquity. He presented his knowledge in many dissertations and programs on philology and hermeneutics . In these writings he also explained individual biblical passages and defended them in part against interpretations that did not fit into his religious way of thinking. All in all, he belonged to the older teaching of the church and associated with other theologians who tried to preserve the original, pure Christianity.

Another area in which Neubauer was well versed was Bible exegesis . He was very committed to recommending a study of Biblical hermeneutics.

He also took care of the improvement of morality, since he published a treatise in 1745 in which he used a word of Jesus to prove that the evil will has an influence on the mind.

He also published works by other theologians, which earned him merits in literary history and in the biographical news. The works of Rambach were particularly close to his heart, of which he published quite a few, adding notes, prefaces, introductions or registers. After Rambach's death he continued with Johann Philipp Fresenius the Hessian Hebopfer theological and philological remarks as well as the news of the now living Evangelical-Lutheran and Reformed theologians in and around Germany .
