description

Vegetative characteristics

Lomatium californicum grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 0.3 to 1.2 meters. The above-ground parts of the plant appear blue-green to green-gray.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 5 to 25 inches long. The leaf blade is 10 to 30 centimeters wide, triangular-obovate and one, two or three pinnate. The leaflets are 2 to 5 inches long, wedge-shaped to oval, usually with three main lobes that are roughly toothed or lobed. The few stem leaves look like the basal leaves. The stem is fibrous at the base. A thickened tap root is formed.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends in California from April to June; in culture it also blooms from late winter to mid-spring. The glabrous inflorescence stem is 15 to 30 centimeters long. The yellow, double-gold inflorescence is relatively wide with a diameter of 15 to 30 centimeters. Bracts are absent or inconspicuous. The 8 to 20 individual umbels are 3 to 8, rarely up to 15 centimeters long, almost identical in shape and often form a disc at the base.

The bald double achene is elongated-oval to elliptical with a length of 10 to 15 millimeters. The "wings" are thickened and less wide than the fruiting body itself. There are three to four oil channels per rib space.

ecology

Lomatium californicum provides food for the caterpillars of the aniseed swallowtail ( Papilio zelicaon ). Small insects are often observed on the flowers.

Occurrence

Lomatium californicum grows in forests and on bushy slopes at altitudes between 150 and 1800 meters. Moreover Lomatium californicum found in partially shaded banks. The habitats are characterized as very dry, sunny and rocky, mountain ridges, chaparral slopes and clearings in oak forests can be settled.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1840 under the name ( Basionym ) Leptotaenia californica by Thomas Nuttall in John Torrey and Asa Gray: A Flora of North America: containing ... 1, 4, page 630. The new combination to Lomatium californicum (Nutt.) Mathias & Constance was published in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club , Volume 69, Issue 3, page 246 in 1942 by Mildred Esther Mathias and Lincoln Constance .

use

Lomatium californicum is a traditional food plant of the Native Americans like the Kawaiisu , the Yuki and the Yurok , who also used different parts of the plant for medicinal purposes. The Yuki chewed them when hunting to mask their own odor from the game. The leaves have a pungent smell of celery . The taste is also compared to that of parsley .
