Long Bay is a place in the Parish of Saint Phillip on the Caribbean island of Antigua , in the state of Antigua and Barbuda .

Location and landscape

Long Bay is located in the far east of the island, on the Atlantic northeast coast, on the tip of the northern of the two peninsulas of Nonsuch Bay . The location extends around Indian Town Creek and Long Bay , and the peninsula between the two, Dums Point .

The location has only around 40 (permanent) residents, the area is a hotel and villa area.

History, infrastructure and sights

When the Europeans arrived, there was probably a large settlement of the native Caribs (Kalinago) here, which died out in the 16th century. During the colonial period, the area was largely uninhabited.

It was not until the beginning of tourism in the 1960s that hotels and holiday resorts were built here. Today Long Bay is home to the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort (ex Occidental, 150 beds) and The Verandah Resort and Spa ( Dian Bay , opened in 2007, 180 beds in villas), two of the largest hotel complexes on the northeast coast. The oldest of the hotels, the Long Bay Hotel (founded in 1966, approx. 40 beds) was recently closed.

Directly to the east, at Indian Town Point , is the Long Bay Public Park and Devils Bridge National Park with the natural monument Devils Bridge , a rock formation. The Long Bay Beach (Grand Pineapple Beach) is freely accessible, and one of the best beaches on the northeast coast, in spite of the surrounding hotels also shows local color.
