History, infrastructure and nature

The Rooms property dates back to the early 18th century. It belonged to the Codringtons , who were among the most important early planter families on the island (in particular, they owned all of Barbuda ). It is recorded that Rooms passed from Colonel Christopher (II.) Codrington to his second son John Archibald when he died in 1738. It was one of the great tobacco, then sugar cane plantations. At the time, the property can still be found on maps on Belfast Bay. The residence was later moved to Laurys Bay, where it can be found around 1770. Rooms is still located there today.

There is nothing left of the historic farms today. Today you will find villa districts of Willikies and the luxury resort The Long House .

In particular, the east of the location is still completely uninhabited, and there are also some of the most extensive remaining mangrove populations on the island. Therefore, the Antiguan nature conservation organization Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) proposed a Rooms and Seatons Coast Protected Area . The marine areas have belonged to the North East Marine Management Area ( NEMMA , 78 km²) since 2006 .
