The crested hummingbirds ( Lophornis ) are a genus of birds from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae).

features

The species of the crested hummingbirds are mainly characterized by the eponymous feather head or a feather hood. As is usual with the hummingbirds, they are very small birds, which usually reach a body length of about 7 to 10 centimeters, the weight is a few grams.

The birds are found in the tropical zones of South and Central America . They feed on the nectar of various flower-bearing plants.

The first scientific description of the crested hummingbird comes from the French naturalist René Primevère Lesson in 1819. A total of ten species are classified in the genus:

  • Gloss elf ( Lophornis stictolophus )
  • Gould elf ( Lophornis gouldii )
  • Short- hooded elf ( Lophornis brachylopha )
  • Peacock Elf ( Lophornis pavonina ): It is also at home in Venezuela, Guyana and northern Brazil. The green bird has no hood, but green, shiny crown feathers. The wings, which are golden green, have black "peacock eyes".
  • Prachtelfe ( Lophornis magnifica ): It is 8 cm small. Their distribution area is in central and southern Brazil . It is provided with a bright red, pointed crown and with thick, white and black banded cheek fans. The female has a white rump band.
  • Redhead Elf ( Lophornis delattrei )
  • Butterfly Elf ( Lophornis chalybeus )
  • Ornate Elf ( Lophornis ornata ): It lives in the east of Venezuela , in Guyana , Suriname , northern Brazil and on Trinidad (island) . The rust-red crown is short, but the cheek fan is long and pointed, rust-red in color with black dots.
  • Black-headed elf ( Lophornis helenae )
  • White-headed elf ( Lophornis adorabilis )
