The ornamental elf ( Lophornis ornatus ) is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae). The species has a large range that includes parts of Trinidad , Venezuela , Guyana , Suriname , French Guiana, and Brazil . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .

features

The jewelry elf reaches a body length of about 6.8 to 7 cm, with a weight of about 1.6 to 2.8 g. The male has a red straight bill with a black tip. The front skull shimmers green and the long crest is dark reddish brown. The rest of the top is shiny pale green. There is a white band on the rump . The upper tail-coverts are purple. The long tufts away from the cheeks are reddish-brown with green shimmering spots in the lower half. The throat shimmers emerald green, the rest of the underside is pale green. With the square tail, the central control feathers are bronze-green, the rest are reddish-brown with bronze-green spots. The females have no tufts of cheekbones. The rump is colored yellow-brown. The underside is reddish brown with green flanks. Young animals resemble the females.

Behavior and nutrition

They get their nectar from blooming acanthus , silk plants of the genus Asclepias , daisy plants , milkweed plants , legumes such as pigeon peas , mint plants , arrowroot plants , myrtle plants , redwood plants and verbena plants of the genus Stachytarpheta . As trapliners, they regularly fly to specific flowers in quick succession. They also feed on arthropods .

Vocalizations

Usually the fairy elf is quiet. They give a short tsip when they eat . Their flight sounds similar to that of bees.

Reproduction

The breeding season in Trinidad is during the dry season from January to April, in Guyana from December to March. They build a goblet-like nest out of fine and soft plant fibers, which they place 2 meters above the ground. A brood consists of two eggs. Hatching by the female takes 13 to 14 days. The nestlings fledge after 20 days.

Pieter Boddaert described the ornamental elf under the name Trochilus ornatus . In 1829 René Primevère Lesson introduced the new genus Lophornis for the ornamental elf. "Lophornis" is made up of the Greek words "lophos λόφος " for "crown, forehead" and "ornis όρνις " for "bird". "Ornatus" is the Latin word for "artful, ornate".
