features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 25 to 32 millimeters. Their wing tops have a greenish-brown or yellowish-brown, marbled basic color, which is interrupted by white spots. Occasionally there is a slightly reddish-brown over-dusting. Butterflies in Turkey are predominantly gray or gray-brown in color. Two white bands of spots on the hind wings are particularly characteristic, the outer one being smaller and more indistinct.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The yellowish colored egg is provided with fine inclined grooves. The caterpillars are plump and thick, only tapered on the foremost two segments. They are light gray to gray-blue in color and covered with fine white dots that form vertical stripes on the back and sides. There is a yellowish stripe above the feet. The whole body including the head is covered with long, thin, white hair. The doll has a dark brown basic color and is covered in blue hoar. The head and rump are short and lightly haired. The cremaster is blunt, conical and has a few small hooks.

Occurrence and habitat

The animals come from North Africa and Southern Europe eastwards to the Middle East . The Loreley thick-headed butterfly is very local in Germany on the Middle Rhine between Lorch and Sankt Goarshausen , i.e. also near the Loreley , which is responsible for the German name. In the Alps it rises to an altitude of 1,500 meters. The species lives in warm and sunny areas, such as B. in rocky ravines or on dry grass slopes with bushes.

Way of life

The moths fly mainly from May to July in warm places. Occasionally the males in particular suckle on moist ground. The females lay the eggs one by one on the leaves of their forage plants. The young caterpillars build a shelter by turning over a leaf on one side and securing it with their spun threads. They also overwinter in a dwelling made of dry, contracted leaves and pupate in spring. The caterpillars feed on Ziesten (Stachys), especially Upright Ziest ( Stachys recta ), German Ziest ( Stachys germanica ) and Field Ziest ( Stachys arvensis ).

Hazard and protection

The Loreley thick-headed butterfly occurs in Germany in Rhineland-Palatinate and is listed in category 1 (threatened with extinction) on the red list of endangered species . In Hesse it is already considered extinct.
