The two sewage systems, sea side

The Lorentzsluizen near Kornwerderzand in the Dutch province of Friesland are the smaller of the two tide barriers in the IJsselmeer closing dike . It consists of two similar sewer systems and the passage for shipping. It was built from 1928 to 1932 and named after the Nobel Prize winner Hendrik Antoon Lorentz , who calculated the effects of the dike.

Sewage systems

The two sewage systems, inside

Each of the two sewer systems consists of five 12 m wide sewers. Each sluice ( Dutch: spuisluis ) has two lift gates. The southern one is the actual gate, which is regularly opened at low tide and closed at high tide. The northern lifting gates are only closed in the event of a storm surge .

Locks

The passage for shipping consists of

  • the tide-free inland port on the IJsselmeer side,
  • two chamber locks :
    • large lock for commercial shipping: 137 m long, 14 m wide and at least 3.50 m deep, permissible immersion depth up to 3.20 m
    • small lock for recreational boaters: 67 m long and 9 m wide, depths as with the large lock
  • the outer harbor, which is dependent on the tide but is still south of the dike
  • the 15.75 m wide passage through the dike with two swing bridges
  • which only by lateral moles protected Buitenhaven (external port)

The three harbor basins in the course of the passage only serve as waiting areas.

future

With the Afsluitdijk project , the entire dam will be upgraded for the years up to 2050 against the expected flood events. As part of this work, a storm surge barrier is being built in Kornwerderzand , which normally remains open. In addition, a third larger shipping lock with a width of 25 meters and a length of 150 meters will be built so that larger new shipyards in the IJsselmeer can pass. For this purpose, the fairway into the IJsselmeer is to be deepened. The sewer constructions are also being reinforced and the closures in the passages are being replaced.
