Barrage (hydraulic engineering)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In hydraulic engineering, barrages are transverse structures in a tidal river , i.e. a river whose water level fluctuates greatly due to the tides . These transverse structures have openings that can be closed if necessary to protect the inland behind them from flooding .

The terminology standard DIN 4047, Part 2, only defines what a barrage is and does not differentiate between barrage in general and storm surge barrier. Therefore, the term “storm surge barrier” is sometimes used for a storm surge-resistant tidal barrier. Almost all tidal barriers are either part of the front dyke line or were part of the construction time. Accordingly, they are also built to withstand storm surges. The only German tidal barrier that was built from the outset under the protection of a storm surge barrier is that in Bremerhaven.

Some barriers are regularly closed at high tide . With some of these tide barriers , the gates have to be actively opened and closed due to their size, others also have classic sluice flaps , where this is usually done passively, due to differences in the water level and thus in the water pressure between the outside and inside.

Storm surge barriers should not obstruct the normal tidal currents and thus keep the estuary areas upstream in a natural state. They are only closed when the water level rises threateningly, usually storm surges , in order to shorten the endangered dyke line and avoid damage to port facilities.
