Lorenz Salomon Beckhardt (born November 30, 1961 in Wiesbaden ) is a German journalist and author .

Life

Beckhardt was born as the child of Shoah survivors and the grandson of Fritz Beckhardt , the highly decorated German-Jewish fighter pilot of the First World War. He attended the Beethoven-Gymnasium in Bonn , where he studied chemistry and then with the completion chemist . Raised a Catholic, he only learned as an adult that he was the child of Jews.

From 1980 to 1990 he was the author and editor of the magazine ila, the Latin America Observatory . During this time he was involved in various non-governmental organizations of the German peace and environmental movement . From 1990 Beckhardt reported on current science for ARD , volunteered at Deutsche Welle in 1992/1993 and worked from 1993 to 2005 as a reporter and editor for the ARD morning magazine and the Tagesschau , among others. a. in the ARD studios in Paris, Brussels and Tel Aviv. In May 1995 he uncovered that, contrary to the assertion of the German government, Turkey was using German tanks in the war against the Kurds, and thus briefly shook the then Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel. Beckhardt writes for various national newspapers. He is the author and editor of historical documentaries. In 2006 he became editor of the WDR science magazine Quarks on WDR television , and in 2018 the radio show of the same name was added on WDR5 . In addition, until 2016 he headed the WDR editorial team of the 3sat science magazine nano . Beckhardt was nominated for the German Television Prize in 2008 with Quarks & Co, received the RWTH Aachen Prize for Science Journalism in 2009, the Ergo Online Media Prize in 2011 and the Cologne Media Prize in 2012. In October 2014 the story of his family was published under the title “The Jew with the Swastika. My German Family ”during construction .

Beckhardt is a regular visitor to Eintracht Frankfurt's home games .
