Lorenz Hutschenreuther , full name Lorenz Christian Friedrich Hutschenreuther (* May 8, 1817 in Hohenberg an der Eger , † October 8, 1886 in Würzburg ) was a porcelain manufacturer and founder of Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG in Selb .

Life

Lorenz Hutschenreuther was the first son of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther and his wife Johanna Maria Barbara, geb. Reuss. His father was a traveling salesman, porcelain painter and the founder of C. M. Hutschenreuther AG Hohenberg . First he learned the art of porcelain manufacture in his parents' porcelain factory. After the death of the father, the mother, Lorenz and the other children continued the business in the old manner. Lorenz tried in vain to set new accents. Lorenz Hutschenreuther married Berta Heßner, a merchant's daughter from Altenburg , in 1843 .

In 1886 he was buried in his hometown of Selb, where a street is named after him.

Since Lorenz Hutschenreuther found no support from the family with suggestions for innovations, he prepared the establishment of his own porcelain factory. After a devastating fire, the opportunity arose in Selb to purchase the Ludwigsmühle. On August 10, 1857, he was granted the concession to build a porcelain factory. In December 1857 he bought the property with his inheritance and built the first factory buildings. Hutschenreuther tried to get models of writing instruments and coffee services from W. Götze in Karlsbad . In March 1859 the new factory was put into operation with around 50 workers. In addition to a kiln, it also had a steam engine and water power. The mass recipes were optimized and improved samples were sent to potential customers in the middle of the year. In 1860 Lorenz Hutschenreuther exhibited at the Leipzig trade fair and was barely able to fulfill the number of orders.

In 1864 more kilns were built and the decorating business was expanded. From 1870 onwards, the porcelains produced and the ever finer dinner services, the majority of which were previously unbranded, were marked with the monogram “L. HR. ”. A main catalog presented almost the entire collection of the manufactory. In 1877 Lorenz Hutschenreuther withdrew from the company for health reasons and moved to Würzburg . Management passed to his two sons Viktor and Eugen as well as Hans Pabst. Pabst, his daughter Wilhelmina's husband, had already accepted Hutschenreuther as a partner in 1864.

In 1880 he started working with Leopold Gmelin (born 1847) and other artists. In 1882, Gmelin and the manufacturer Hutschenreuther received the gold medal for decorated dinner service at the trade exhibition in Nuremberg . In 1902 the company was converted into a stock corporation and traded as Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb . The AG expanded: in 1906 it acquired the porcelain factory Jäger, Werner & Co., and in 1917 the porcelain factory Paul Müller. In the same year the Lorenz Hutschenreuther art department was founded. The artistic director was Professor Fritz Klee , director of the Royal College in Selb. Together with his colleague Veit, he contributed a large part of the shape and decor designs. In 1922 the sculptors Karl Tutter and Carl Werner were entrusted with the artistic direction of the art department. The quality and quantity of production increased.

In 1927 the Tirschenreuth and Bauscher brothers' porcelain factories in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate were affiliated , and in 1928 the Königszelt porcelain factory . In 1934, Max Adolf Pfeiffer , previously general director of the state-owned porcelain manufacturer Meissen , became artistic and technical advisor. He brought important contemporary sculptors such as Paul Scheurich , Max Esser and Emil Paul Börner to Lorenz Hutschenreuther.

In 1946, production started again with small programs in the company's western operations; large shipments went to the US military administration. In 1954, round ovens were converted to tunnel ovens. Since the end of the 1950s, freelance artists have increasingly been tied to the company, Hans Achtziger is the head of the art department and the studio for design, and Gunther Granget has financed a study trip to North America, after which bird figures were created. With the acquisition of the majority of the shares in the CM Hutschenreuther porcelain factory in Hohenberg, it was incorporated into Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG in 1969 : The Hutschenreuther AG was established until 1998. Hutschenreuther has been a brand of the Sambonet Rosenthal Group since 2000 .
