Lorenz Nikolai Achté (born May 25, 1835 in Pori ; † April 18, 1900 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish conductor , composer , opera singer and music teacher . He founded the School of Cantors and Organists in Helsinki.

Life

Lorenz Nikolai Achté was the son of Major Nikolai Achté (born in Livonia) (March 9, 1799 - September 30, 1857) and his wife Sofia Charlotte Gottleben (November 22, 1816 - June 18, 1863). His wife was the opera singer and singing teacher Emmy Charlotta Strömer (born November 14, 1850, † December 2, 1924). The soprano Aino Ackté and Irma Achté were her children. Irma was also an opera singer and singing teacher. She was an alto and performed under the stage name Irma Tervani.

At first, Achté was the conductor of a student orchestra that performed his compositions. He was the head of a vocal ensemble at the university. He taught singing and worked to raise the level of church music. He made two study trips abroad. In 1872 he was in Germany, where he dealt with church music and theology, because he wanted to found a church music school. But he initially postponed this plan because he had been engaged as a baritone at the Finnish Theater in Helsinki, which was founded in 1872. Here he also led rehearsals and acted as an opera conductor. He married the prima donna of the theater, Emmy Strömer. In 1876, Achté was replaced by the Czech conductor Bohuslav Hřímalý (born April 18, 1848, † October 11, 1894). Thereupon Emmy also left the theater in protest, which was finally closed in 1879. After his release, Achté became cantor at the Old Church in Helsinki. Here he led a choir with male and boy voices. In 1882 he founded the Helsinki School of Cantors and Organists, which later became the Helsinki School of Church Music. At first only Achté and his wife taught. Similar schools were established in Turku , Oulu and Viipuri . The quality of church music in the country increased with the number of trained cantors and organists.

Achté was one of the founders of Suomalainen Seura, the Finnish society.
