Lorenzo Respighi

Lorenzo Respighi (born October 7, 1824 in Cortemaggiore in the province of Piacenza , † December 10, 1889 in Rome ) was an Italian astronomer .

Life

Respighi studied at the University of Parma and the University of Bologna , became professor of optics and astronomy at the latter in 1851 and director of the observatory in 1855, in 1865 professor at the University of Rome and after Ignazio Calandrelli's death (February 12, 1866) his successor as director of the observatory the Capitol, which office he held until his death.

Respighi's works relate mainly to physical astronomy, scintillation, spectra of the stars and the corona, protuberances of the sun, the systematic spectroscopic observation of which he began in 1868, sunspots and flares; He has also compiled a catalog of 2,534 stars 1st to 6th magnitude in the northern hemisphere from observations made in the years 1875 to 1881.

The lunar crater Respighi and the asteroid (16930) Respighi are named after him.
