The Loro Parque Foundation ( Loro Parque Fundación, LPF ) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization registered with the Ministry of Education and Science in Spain in 1994 . The foundation is active worldwide in animal and species protection, education and research to promote the conservation of endangered parrots and marine mammals as well as their habitats. Its headquarters are in Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife .

history

The foundation was founded by Wolfgang Kiessling , the founder of Loro Parque , who was its president until the end of 2016. His first contribution was to transfer ownership of the parrot collection to the LPF.

In 2017 there was a generation change in the presidium. Wolfgang Kiessling handed over the management of the foundation to his son Christoph Kiessling.

organization

In 1995, the parrot conservation, research and education programs were introduced.

Species and animal protection:

The area of species protection includes extensive funding for conservation projects in the field (in-situ measures), but also the maintenance breeding in the non-public breeding station “La Vera” (ex-situ measures), which is essential for the genetic reserve.

The animal welfare sector is being promoted to a large extent for cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and corresponding projects are promoted.

The foundation's scientific advisory board was established in 1996, which in 2018 consisted of Nigel Collar , Povl Jorgensen, Rosemary Low , Juan Sebastian Villalba-Macias, Roland Wirth and René Wüst. From 1999 to 2013 Wolfgang Grummt was on the advisory board. Matthias Reinschmidt and Vincent Janik were appointed in September 2019 .

Education:

In 1997 a pilot project was launched in which a future release of Spix's Macaws , the rarest parrot species in the world, bred in captivity , was prepared on an experimental basis and has since brought promising results. The new parrot breeding station “La Vera” was also presented. In 1998 and 1999 the activities of the environmental education department were intensified considerably. An agreement with the school authorities has been signed, a range of teaching and teaching materials has been drawn up and distributed to all schools in the Canary Islands .

With the establishment of the "Animal Embassy", education was concentrated in Loro Parque. Not only are regular visitors made aware of the threat to the animal world, but school groups are also instructed in ecology . Students receive regular training. A separate initial magazine, now the Cyanopsitta newspaper , provides information as an in-house communication tool.

The LPF also occasionally appoints ambassadors who are supposed to work for the foundation's goals. In 2018 Matthias Reinschmidt was appointed, previously a. a. already Frank Elstner and Hardy Krüger jr.

Research:

The research focus also covers both areas. B. scientific work from field projects, as well as from keeping and breeding in captivity, u. a. with the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Giessen around Michael Lierz and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology with the behavioral research of the Comparative Cognition Research Group (CCRG) around Auguste von Bayern for science.

Congresses

In 1998 the LPF organized the International Parrot Congress for the first time (the previous three congresses were organized by Loro Parque) and on this occasion was able to present the species protection measures it coordinated to a wider audience. Every four years up to 850 participants from all over the world come to Puerto de la Cruz for this event. This represents the largest and most important meeting point of this scene.

In 2003, Loro Parque and the Foundation organized the annual conference of the European Association of Avian Veterinarians (EAAV). At the same time, the LPF supported a conference of the BirdLife International's Rare Bird Club. In the same year Loro Parque and the foundation organized the workshop “Integration of sustainable tourism and the conservation of fauna x-situ” and created a rescue plan for the Spix's macaw.

mission

The mission of the LPF is to preserve parrots and their habitats through education, research, responsible breeding and local conservation programs . Conservation efforts also include the marine environment.

budget

The annual budget for conservation projects in 2019 was over $ 1 million. The special thing about the foundation is that Loro Parque bears all administrative costs and thus 100% of the donations flow directly into the projects. Over the past few years, nearly $ 19 million in funding has been raised in 160 projects in 37 countries across five continents.
