Matthias Werner Reinschmidt (born May 28, 1964 in Bühl (Baden) ) is a German biologist and animal physiologist . He was the curator and zoological director of Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Foundation and has been director of the Karlsruhe Zoo since 2015 .

Life

After graduating from high school at the Lender home school in Sasbach, he completed his military service in Bad Bergzabern and Bruchsal as a telecommunications operator . From 1986 he worked as an intern in the Karlsruhe Zoological Garden . From 1986 to 1995 he studied biology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . From 1993 to 2001 he was the responsible editor of the journal PAPAGEIEN of the Arndt-Verlag, from 2001 he was a regular member of the editorial board and since 2001 has been an editorial member of the magazine Cyanopsitta , which deals with the animal, species and nature conservation projects of the Loro Parque Foundation. He was briefly breeding manager at Loro Parque before he was appointed curator in June 2001. Since December 2010 Matthias Reinschmidt has been the zoological director of Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Fundacion. On July 1, 2015, he took over the management of the Karlsruhe Zoo.

In 2007 he did his doctorate at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and was the first in Germany to receive the title of Dr. biol. anim. Since 2008 he has been a lecturer at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

The focus of his work is the conservation breeding of endangered parrot species, in particular the Spix's Macaw , which is already considered extinct in the wild, and the Lear's Macaw , whose population is also severely threatened. He is also committed to endangered species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Matthias Reinschmidt became known to a wide audience primarily through the broadcast Parrots, Palms & Co. on ARD as well as Hundkatzemaus and Menschen, Animals & Doctors on VOX . After his appearance on the talk show People of the Week , he agreed with Frank Elstner that he would accompany him with a television team on an expedition into the Brazilian jungle. The team visited the threatened habitats of the parrots and filmed a species protection documentary. The two-part television documentary of this trip was broadcast on SWR television for the first time on December 25 and 26, 2010 and has since been repeated several times.

In over 400 TV productions for various German and international TV stations, he has since worked as Loro Parque curator and director, but also as a presenter. His around 1000 articles in ornithological and zoological journals have been published in 18 countries worldwide. He lectures on his experiences in parrot breeding at numerous international congresses in the field of species protection and conservation.

Reinschmidt is a member of the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ) and the Zoological Society for Species and Population Protection (ZGAP) . He is a member of the advisory board of the Fund for Endangered Parrots , a ZGAP working group that carries out and supports projects for the conservation of endangered parrot species worldwide. In September 2019 he was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the Loro Parque Foundation.

Reinschmidt is married and has one son.
