Los Reyes de Salgado is a city in the Mexican state of Michoacán . It is the capital of the Municipio Los Reyes . The city is 1,300 meters above sea level and has 32,488 inhabitants (2005 census).
history
Even before the arrival of the Spaniards , the valley was populated by Purépechas , who called this area Acuitzato. At that time there were three villages in the area of today's city, which the Spaniards named San Pedro, San Gabriel and San Rafael when they arrived. The villages grew together to form today's city, which was officially founded on May 12, 1594 as Los Santos Reyes. The name is an allusion to the three wise men.
In 1831 the municipality of Los Reyes was founded. Los Santos Reyes continues to develop demographically and economically and in 1837 becomes the capital of the Poniente district. The village is now the urban center in the Peribán Valley. In 1859 Los Santos Reyes was upgraded to a villa following a resolution by the state congress and from then on bears the name Villa de Salgado in memory of Don José Francisco Trinidad Salgado Rentería, the second governor of Michoacán who came from Los Reyes . In 1861 the city becomes a district.
On April 19, 1865, a battle took place between Republican forces under General Salazar and French interventionists .
In 1921 the name was changed to Los Reyes de Salgado . On June 20, 1950, Los Reyes de Salgado was officially classified as a city ( Ciudad ).

The economy is dominated by agriculture , retail and the service sector. Los Reyes de Salgado is the economic center of the surrounding area.
The sugarcane cultivation played a major role since the founding of the city. Sugar and alcohol factories were established. Since Mexico began to import more and more sugar from Cuba , people turned to growing fruits. Above all blackberries , but also avocados , agaves , peaches and strawberries are grown.
