Lothar Hardick OFM (* August 24, 1913 ; † February 20, 1999 ) was a German Franciscan and church historian.

Act

After entering the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ), Lothar Hardick received impulses about the history and spirituality of the Franciscan Order from Fr. Autbert Stroick , lecturer for church history at the Philosophical-Theological School of Saxonia in Dorsten, during his theology studies  Beginning to deal. He was a soldier in World War II . In 1946 he began to study church history at the University of Münster and received his doctorate under Georg Schreiber on the subject of the conflict between Cistercians and Cluniacians in the 12th century. In addition to the history of the order, his main focus was on folklore and religious customs.

Together with the Franciscan order historians Sophronius Clasen and Kajetan Eßer ( Cologne Franciscan Province ) and Engelbert Grau ( Bavarian Franciscan Province ) he published the series of Franciscan Sources , the first volume in 1951, Writings of St. Francis of Assisi . Hardick's contribution to this was investigations into the various versions of the rule of the order of the founder Francis of Assisi . The authors saw their research on the beginnings of the order as a contribution to a renewal of the religious life and its spirituality . In 1961, Father Lothar Hardick was appointed by the Minister General of the Franciscan Order to head the historical section of the Order of St. Bonaventure in Quaracchi near Florence. From 1962 to 1967 he was chief editor of the quarterly Franciscan Studies .

Hardick published numerous articles on Franciscan history and spirituality and thus turned to Franciscan sister communities where he was pastorally active. He gave lectures and recollections, which were also made available to nunneries as tape recordings, and participated in congresses and training courses, especially for women religious in leadership roles. His research on the sources of Franciscan spirituality flowed into the statutes and statutes of numerous religious orders when these were revised at the request of the Second Vatican Council (decree on the contemporary renewal of religious life Perfectae caritatis ). From 1972 to 1984 Fr. Lothar Hardick published the magazine Dienender Glaube on behalf of Saxonia , which was aimed at women religious.

For many years he supervised the annual work weeks of the "Franciscan Working Group in Northwest Germany", which arose on his initiative and at which representatives of the Franciscan men's and women's orders met: Lothar Hardick edited the lecture texts for these meetings and often acted as a speaker himself With. The working group merged in 1968 with the “South German Franciscan Working Group” led by Capuchins to form the “Franciscan Working Group” ( FAG ), which is dedicated to reflecting on Franciscan spirituality, researching and communicating it. It has existed since 1982 as the "Inter-Franciscan Working Group - INFAG".

Several of Hardick's publications were devoted to the interpretation of the Franciscan concept of peace. For the 2nd edition of the Lexicon for Theology and Church , he wrote over thirty articles on Franciscan topics and on individual members of the Franciscan orders between 1959 and 1965.
