Jordan of Giano ( lat. Jordanus de Yano * to 1195 in Giano (Diocese of Spoleto ); † after 1262 in Magdeburg ) was a medieval religious priests and chronicler of the Order of Franciscans .

Life

Only what he wrote down in his chronicle is known about Jordan von Giano. He probably entered the Order of the Friars Minor in 1217 or 1218. At the chapter of mats on Whitsun 1221 in Assisi , he was sent to Germany with 27 other brothers to preach the gospel there. The group led by Caesarius von Speyer set out from Trento at the end of September and reached Augsburg in mid-October 1221. Jordan was sent from there to Salzburg with two brothers . In 1222 he traveled to Speyer via Würzburg , Mainz and Worms .

In 1223 he was ordained a priest in Speyer and shortly afterwards Guardian of the local convent . He then became a Guardian in Mainz. From there the Provincial Albert sent him from Pisa to Thuringia . In 1224 Jordan arrived in Erfurt with seven brothers . Several convents were founded in the area, and Jordan became custodian in Thuringia. During this time he traveled to Italy twice. In 1230 he visited his friend Thomas von Celano and received from him some relics of St. Francis . In 1238 he traveled to Pope Gregory IX. to complain about the administration of the Minister General Elias of Cortona .

In 1241 Jordan became custodian of Giano in Bohemia and Poland . In 1262 he was commissioned by the provincial chapter in Halberstadt to write down the development of the order in Germany in the form of a chronicle. For this purpose he dictated his memories to Brother Baldwin of Brandenburg. The chronicle covers the period from 1209 to 1262 and is one of the most important sources for the expansion of the Franciscan order in Central Europe.
