Lothar Lockl (born December 5, 1968 in Vienna ) is an Austrian strategy and political advisor. He became famous as the campaign manager for Alexander Van der Bellen in the Austrian federal presidential election in 2016 . He continues to work for this as an external consultant.

Career

From a young age, Lockl took part in the occupation of the Stopfenreuther Au . He studied political and communication science at the University of Vienna . During this time, between 1989 and 1999 he worked for the Austrian environmental protection organization Global 2000, among other things as press spokesman and political coordinator. He organized campaigns against the Bohunice and Mochovce nuclear power plants , which are located near the Austrian border.

In April 1997, Lockl was one of the organizers of the Austrian genetic engineering referendum , the second most successful referendum in Austria with over 1.2 million signatures.

In 2000 he switched to politics for the Greens . There he worked first as a campaign manager, then as head of communications and from autumn 2006 as federal party secretary. Among other things, he was responsible for the National Council election campaign in 2006, in which the Greens became the third strongest force at the federal level for the first time.

In 2009 he left politics, started his own business as a communications, strategy and political consultant and founded “Lothar Locklstrategy GmbH”, since autumn 2019 “Lockl & Keck GmbH”. “Brainbows Informationsmanagement GmbH” has a 15% stake in Lockl's agency.

From 2010 to 2012 Lockl was Secretary General of the International Advertising Association (IAA) Austria. Since 2018 he has been a member of the board of directors of the soccer club FK Austria Wien . In March 2020 he was appointed by the Federal Government as a member of the ORF Foundation Council .

In the run-up to the government negotiations between the ÖVP and the Greens in 2019, Lothar Lockl was considered a potential candidate of the Greens for a ministerial office.

Lockl has one son. Since spring 2019 he has been living separately from the Austrian journalist Claudia Reiterer .
