Lothar Mörl (born November 12, 1940 in what was then Obergraupen, Teplitz-Schönau district , Reichsgau Sudetenland , today: Horní Krupka , Czech Republic ) is a German engineer and university professor .

Life

From 1961 to 1967 Mörl studied at the Technical University of Magdeburg , specializing in chemical apparatus. He completed his studies as a graduate engineer. Then he worked as a scientific assistant to Prof. Manfred Mittelstraß at the Institute for Chemical Apparatus at the TH Magdeburg. In 1972 Mörl received his doctorate with a thesis on the subject of multi-stage, multi-zone fluidized bed columns for adsorptive separation processes in the gas phase at the TH Magdeburg. After receiving his doctorate, he became a senior assistant and turned to fluidized bed technology .

This was followed by three years, from 1976 to 1978, in the heavy engineering combine "Ernst Thälmann" . There he worked in the main research and development department, where he planned fluidized bed plants and managed their commissioning in the Soviet Union .

In 1978 he returned to the TH Magdeburg, where he became a university lecturer for systems engineering in the apparatus and systems engineering section. In 1980 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on application possibilities and calculation of fluidized bed granulation drying systems there. From 1982 he was professor for thermal separation. In 1992 he received the chair of chemical apparatus engineering at the Institute for Apparatus and Environmental Technology of the Technical University "Otto von Guericke" Magdeburg.

Research areas

Mörl dealt with fluidized bed technology. More than 180 patents and many publications in this field resulted from his work. His research results were applied in the areas of detergent granulation, sugar drying and coffee roasting. He worked together with

Mörl managed almost 40 projects. Some of them:

  • 1998–1999: Roasting of granular goods in discontinuously operated fluidized beds
  • 2001–2002: InnoRegio REPHYNA project: Process for the extraction of active ingredients from domestic aromatic plants using low temperatures
  • 2007: Investigation of a self-cooling, environmentally friendly dryer
  • 2007–2008: Desolventization of rapeseed meal in fluidized beds
  • 2010–2011: Development of reinforcing carbon blacks through pyrolysis of used tires
  • 2016–2018: Development of a method for incorporating urea into an ointment base for the development of a keratolytic
  • 2020–2021: Plant and process for processing liquid manure in connection with the extraction of valuable materials

Awards and honors

For his part in the development of a new operating principle for fluidized bed technology, Mörl was awarded the National Prize of the GDR III in 1980 . Awarded science and technology class. In 2000 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy Sofia (UCTM), Bulgaria . In 2002 Mörl was awarded the Gruson plaque of honor from the Association of German Engineers (VDI).

Offices and memberships

Mörl is a member of the VDI. He is also involved in the Emeritio professors' college , which is dedicated to the generally understandable transfer of knowledge to broad sections of the population.
