Lothar von Wolfersdorf

Lothar von Wolfersdorf (born June 13, 1934 in Zeitz ; † November 30, 2010 in Freiberg , Saxony ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

Wolfersdorf studied mathematics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . He completed his studies in 1957 with a thesis on Poincaré's boundary value problem in potential theory. Hans Schubert supervised his diploma thesis .

In 1961 Wolfersdorf obtained his doctorate there with a thesis on the singular elliptic Neumann problem of the Tricomi equation . The reviewers were Hans Schubert and Herbert Beckert .

In 1965 Wolfersdorf moved to the Freiberg Mining Academy . There he worked first as a lecturer, then as a professor. In 1966 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the topic of calculating optimal strategies for games over the unit square with disbursement functions on the main diagonal . Reviewers were Herbert Beckert, Fritz Rühs and Rolf Klötzler .

Since his appointment as full professor in 1968, Wolfersdorf has held various chairs at the Bergakademie Freiberg, most recently from 1999 the corner professorship “Applied Analysis”. After the fall of the Wall , Wolfersdorf made a significant contribution to the renewal of the Bergakademie in the early 1990s. As dean of the newly founded Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, he made the difficult personnel decisions caused by the fall of the Berlin Wall in a humane manner and with a sound sense of proportion.

Research topics

Wolfersdorf did research in the field of analysis and optimization . In addition to his theoretical work, Wolfersdorf also dealt with applications of mathematics in geophysics, materials science, hydromechanics and medicine.

Memberships

Wolfersdorf had been a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since October 11, 1991 .
