Live and act

Louis-André-Gabriel Bouchet was a student of Jacques-Louis David at the École des Beaux-Arts . In 1797 he was awarded the Prix de Rome . Bouchet presented his works in the Salon de Paris until 1819 . Today most of his works are in the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence , the Musée de Picardie in Amiens , the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers , the Musée Municipal in Compiègne , the Institute of Arts in Detroit , the Musée de Peinture et de Sculpture in Grenoble and the Grand Trianon in Versailles performed and exhibited. The Detroit Works were part of a larger composition in which the family portrait forms the center.

The Odyssey of the Portraits of Napoléon and Joséphine

On behalf of Emperor Napoléon I , Bouchet made his portrait in 1807 as a counterpart to the work of Empress Joséphine , which Robert Lefèvre had created in 1805. Napoléon donated these two portraits to the city of Aachen on December 6, 1807 , the inauguration of which was held on June 1, 1809 with a solemn ceremony at which Maire Cornelius von Guaita and Prefect Jean Charles François de Ladoucette gave the laudatory speech.

After Napoléon's abdication, the two works were initially stored in a “shed”. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. finally ordered the paintings to Berlin because of their art-historical value. The two portraits were then packaged by the Aachen painter Johann Ferdinand Jansen and sent in December 1816 to the director of the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts Johann Gottfried Schadow in Berlin.

In the meantime, these portraits were also in the Berlin City Palace for a while . After the Mayor of Aachen, Edmund Emundts , visited King Friedrich Wilhelm IV on October 15, 1840 , Emundts received the paintings back on December 11 of the same year and had them displayed in the Aachen City Hall . A year later, Friedrich Wilhelm IV had Carl Schmid make copies of the portraits.

On February 12, 1878, they decorated the first exhibition of the Aachen Museum Association in the Redoute Komphausbadstrasse. As part of the establishment of his foundation for the establishment of an Aachen museum in 1882, the Aachen entrepreneur and art patron Barthold Suermondt set the condition that the paintings should be integrated into the inventory of the new museum. For many decades they were then in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum and from 2011 they will be hanging again in the council chamber of the Aachen town hall.
