Louis-Joseph Buffet (born October 26, 1818 in Mirecourt , † July 7, 1898 in Paris ) was a French statesman and Prime Minister from 1875 to 1876 .

Life

After the February Revolution of 1848 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Vosges department and represented the interests of the right. Buffet voted for Napoléon III in June 1848 . From August to December 1849 and from August to October 1851 he was Minister of Agriculture. In 1863 he was re-elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and stood out alongside Émile Ollivier as one of the supporters of the “liberal empire”. This then appointed him from January to April 10, 1870 as Minister of Finance in his cabinet.

After establishing the Third Republic in 1871, he served as President of the Chamber of Deputies from April 4, 1872 to March 10, 1875 . From 1875 to 1876, Buffet was himself Prime Minister and at the same time took over the management of the Ministry of the Interior. In 1876 his re-election as a member of the National Assembly failed because of difficulties with the Republican Party. However, he was elected Senator for life that same year. Despite his oratorial talents, Buffet spent most of his time as a politician in the opposition .
