Louis Gustave Cambier (born June 13, 1874 in Schaerbeek , † May 23, 1949 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian painter, etcher and sculptor.

Cambier studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with Jean-François Portaels , Jean-Joseph Jaquet and Louis-Eugène Simonis . In 1898 he was a co-founder of the Brussels artist group “Le Labeur”.

He went on a study trip to Jerusalem. He also traveled to Brittany, Italy and Turkey. He matle portraits, landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes. He was also engaged in etchings and sculpture.

He came to Paris and studied at the Académie Ranson . He was friends with Paul Signac , Maurice Denis , Ker-Xavier Roussel and Paul Sérusier . During the First World War he was a professor of sculpture at the Academy of Nice . Henri Matisse was one of his students . He then lived in Cagnes , where he met Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac.

He was elected a member of the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Bruxelles and received an honorable mention in the Salon of French Artists in 1906.

Back in Belgium after 1920, Cambier devoted himself to portraying his contemporaries in a precise Renaissance style. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Namur, Nice, and Vienna.
