The icebreaker Louis S. St-Laurent is a ship of the Canadian Coast Guard (Canadian Coast Guard; CCG). It was named after the twelfth Prime Minister of Canada Louis Saint-Laurent . According to the financial planning of the Canadian government, the ship is to remain in operation until 2017, when it will be replaced by a new construction of C $ 720 million, the John G. Diefenbaker . Since in the meantime, however, the John G. Diefenbaker will probably not be put into service until 2021-2022, the Louis S. St-Laurent will remain in service until then.
The icebreaker was built between 1966 and 1969 in the Canadian Vickers shipyard in Montreal, Canada. Its actual areas of application are the Canadian coastal waters. It is the largest ship in the Canadian Coast Guard fleet.
This icebreaker is one of the most important ships in the Canadian Coast Guard . In 1976, the ship passed together with the research vessel Canmar Explorer the Northwest Passage and presented his special skills. The icebreaker does not have modern auxiliary systems such as water flushing, air injection and additional propulsion propellers. In 1988 the ship was modernized and rebuilt. It received a completely new machine system and a new bow shape .
