Louis Terrenoire

Louis Terrenoire (born November 10, 1908 in Lyon , † January 8, 1992 in Paris ) was a French journalist and politician.

Life

He was the leader of the Christian trade unions (1928), editor of La Voix sociale and the Nouveau Journal de Lyon (1930-1931). In 1932 he went to L'Aube , the publication organ of the Christian Democrats.

From 1940 he worked in the Resistance and in 1943 became secretary of the " Conseil National de la Resistance " (CNR). In December 1943 and again in March 1944, the Gestapo arrested him and finally transferred him to the Dachau concentration camp . He later described the time of his deportation in the book Sursitaire de la mort lente , where he describes, among other things, the cooperation between Christians and Communists in order to survive in the concentration camp .

After the liberation, he became a member of the Mouvement républicain populaire (MRP) of the Orne department in 1946 in the two constituent assemblies and then in the National Assembly. In 1947 he joined the “ Rassemblement du peuple français (RPF)”.

Terrenoire was from 1951 to 1954 and again from 1958 General Secretary of the Gaullist movement. He was parliamentary group leader of the Union pour la Nouvelle République (UNR) group in the National Assembly (1959-1960) and information minister from February 1960 to August 1961, then state secretary for relations with parliament from August 1961 to April 1962. At this time he practiced also the function of a government spokesman from Charles de Gaulle .

From 1962 to 1973 Louis Terrenoire was a member of the European Parliament , from 1967 to 1972 in the role of Vice-President .

From 1963 to 1964 he was co-editor of the left-wing Gaullist weekly “Notre République”. In 1962, 1967 and 1968 he was re-elected for the "Union pour la Nouvelle République", which appeared under various names (UNR, UNR-UDT, UD-Ve République and UDR). His stepfather Francisque Gay was a minister of state under de Gaulle and his son Alain was a member of the Loire department .

Louis Terrenoire was Mayor of Ceauce (Orne) for 18 years from 1959 to 1977 . He played an important role in supporting the Arab peoples, especially the Palestinians , together with his friends “Témoignage Chrétien (Christian Witness)” and within the framework of the Franco-Arab Solidarity Association (ASFA). In 1974 he was made Commander of the Legion of Honor . In 1987 he voluntarily retired from public life.
