Louis Vautrey

Louis Vautrey (born June 22, 1829 in Pruntrut , † May 5, 1886 in Delsberg ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and historian .

Life

Louis Vautrey was the son of Joseph Francois Vautrey (1782-1838), politician and his wife Constance, daughter of Joseph Aloys Joliat, former sub-prefect of Altkirch .

He attended the humanistic grammar school in Paris and then the seminary in Langres and Solothurn ; In 1852 he was ordained a priest .

Louis Vautrey worked as a teacher at a boarding school and from 1851 to 1858 at the high school in Pruntrut. In 1859 he became vicar in Pruntrut until he was administrator and then pastor and dean of Delémont in 1863 . He was the initiator of the coronation celebrations in 1869, when the 16th century Madonna, which stands in the Chapelle du Vorbourg near Delémont, was crowned.

During the Kulturkampf he organized the protest against the dismissal of Bishop Eugène Lachat and wrote a letter that was signed by all the priests of the canton of Jura , whereupon the Bern government removed him from office and he went into exile in Paris from 1873 to 1875. On his return he was Vicar General of Bishop Eugène Lachat, but without this title.

He dealt as a historian with Jurassic history and in 1867 completed the 5th volume of the Monuments de l'histoire de l'ancien Evêché de Bâle by Joseph Trouillat (1815–1863).

Honors

In Delémont, Rue Louis-Vautrey was named after Louis Vautrey in 1944.

Trivia

Since 2007, residents of Delsberg have organized a neighborhood party called Fête à Louis around rue Louis-Vautrey every summer around June 22nd, Louis Vautrey's birthday .
