Louis Wieting (captain, 1819)

Louis Wieting (born September 17, 1819 in Vegesack , † December 1, 1883 in Rönnebeck ) was a German captain, merchant and brewer.

Life

Wieting was the youngest son of Captain Cord Wieting (1772–1828) and his second wife Anna Wieting, nee. Ruyter. He had been married to Adelheid Juliane Dallmann, a sister of Eduard Dallmann , since October 14, 1849 .

In the spring of 1833, after his confirmation, he began his career as a cabin boy on the brig Bremen Paket of the shipping company DH Wätjen & Co on the North American voyage. The captain of the ship was his eldest brother, Johann Bernhard Wieting. Since 1837 Wieting has been a sailor on the packet sailing ship Columbia in North America. On June 26, 1839, after training at the navigation institute in Bremen, he received his patent as a helmsman .

From 1845 to 1854 he undertook two successful whaling trips with the full ship Otaheite for the Bremer Südseeverein shipping company . In July 1854 the shipping company was dissolved, and with it the end of the seafaring career of Captain Louis Wieting. Until his death he was a successful businessman and brewer. He owned his own brewery with an ice cellar in Rönnebeck.

In addition to Louis Wieting, his four older brothers were also captains. His brothers Heinrich Wieting (1815–1868) and Karl (1813–1896) were active in emigrating to North America.

Through joint sea voyages with his brothers Johann Bernhard (1801–1878) and Erich (1811–1858), in the period between 1833 and 1845, Louis continuously expanded his seafaring skills. Johann Bernhard Wieting was accepted as a member of the Bremen Haus Seefahrt institution in 1830 , elected as a conductor in 1845 and became senior in 1859. Erich Wieting became a member of the Seefahrt House in 1839 and was elected Schaffer in 1855 .

His two sons Louis Wieting (1850-1915) and Erich (1864-1930) were also captains.
