Louise Moillon (* 1610 in Paris ; † 1696 there ) was a French painter . She is one of the most famous French still life painters of the 17th century. As with other women in the arts , her main creative period was prior to her marriage in the 1630s.

Life

Louise Moillon comes from a Huguenot family and grew up in an environment characterized by art and painting in Paris. She was the daughter of the painter Nicolas Moillon (1555-1619), a portrait and landscape painter , who gave her her first lessons in painting. Her brother, Isaac Moillon, is also one of the well-known French painters of the time. Louise's father died when she was 10 years old, her mother was married again to a Protestant artist, the still life painter and picture dealer François Garnier. Louise continued her artistic training with him and was able to sell her first still lifes before she was 20 .

In 1641 she married the wealthy timber merchant Etienne Girardot de Chancourt, who came from a Huguenot family from Burgundy . The persecution of French Protestants after the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685 also affected Louise Moillon and her family. Her husband was arrested and two of her children fled into exile in England. Louise Moillon died in 1696 at the age of 86.
