Margarete Zimmermann (born June 7, 1949 in Rehme , Bad Oeynhausen ) is a German Romance philologist and professor emeritus .

Life

Margarete Zimmermann grew up in Bad Oeynhausen in North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1968 studied Romance languages, German and comparative literature in Paris , Freiburg , Hamburg , Bordeaux and Perugia . After a maîtrise in comparative literature at the University of Bordeaux III (1972), she passed the state examination in German and Romance studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in 1975 .

From 1975 to 1988 Zimmermann worked at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster , where she obtained her doctorate in 1978 with a study on Drieu La Rochelle and the literature of French fascism, and in 1985 she qualified as a professor with a study on didactic literature for women in late medieval France.

After substitute professorships in Trier and Gießen, she taught Romance Philology (French and Italian literature) at the Free University of Berlin from 1988 to 2002 and at the France Center of the TU Berlin from 2002 to 2003 .

From 2006 she was Professor of Comparative Literature at the France Center of the Free University of Berlin and from 2008 to 2014 Director of the France Center. In 2009 she set up the Observatoire de l'extrême contemporain, a center for research into and communication of contemporary francophone literature, which Roswitha Böhm is continuing today at the TU Dresden . In 2012 she was visiting professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon.

In 2010 Zimmermann was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur .

research

Zimmermann's research focuses on the literature of the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, French literature from the interwar period and the 21st century, as well as problems of literary historiography, historical gender studies and cultural transfer. In 1986 she translated Christine de Pizan's work Le Livre de la Cité des Dames into German and published numerous texts on this author. More recent studies are dedicated to the artists Colette Deblé , Jeanne Mammen and Sonia Delaunay .
