The Loxsomataceae are a family of tree ferns (Cyatheales). The spelling should be Loxsomataceae - not Loxomataceae - otherwise it could be confused with an orchid genus.

features

The rhizomes are long creeping, have a solenostele and have hair with a round, multicellular base. The leaf blades are double or multiple pinnate. The nerves are free-ended and forked. The hair is single or multicellular.

The sori are on the edge of the leaf (marginal) at the end of nerves. Each sorus has an urn-shaped indusium and an elongated, often raised receptacle . The sporangia stand on thick, short stalks and have a slightly opaque annulus. The spores are tetrahedral and trilet (three-part scar).

The gametophyte has flaky hair.

The basic chromosome number is x = 46 or 50.

distribution

The family occurs in the South American Andes , in southern Central America , and in New Zealand .

Systematics

The Loxsomataceae consist of two monotypical genera. The family is monophyletic . Smith et al. (2006) give the following two genera:

  • Loxsoma R. Br. Ex A. Cunn. , with only one species in New Zealand:
  • Loxsomopsis Christ , with a species in tropical America:
